The Tom Tudek Memorial Butterfly Garden

History -

The Tom Tudek Memorial Butterfly Garden is located in Tudek Park (Ferguson Township), in State College, Pa. The park was established by the Robert Tudek Family as a memorial to their son who was killed in an accident just before he graduated from high school.

Like many young boys, Tom had a collection of butterflies.

Master Gardeners have partnered with Professor Emeritus Bob Snetsinger, aka "Butterfly Bob".

The Butterfly Garden was established in 1996, initially it was approximately one acre in area.
In 2001 it was expanded to about three acres.

Master Gardeners formed a new partnership with Butterfly Bob in 2007.
Many volunteer hours were spent  planting, weeding, and studying the Butterflies and the plants they prefer.

Every visit to Tudek Park is a learning experience.

2007 projects included developing a map of the different planting areas to facilitate self-guided walking tours, periodically updating the educational kiosk to reflect different things happening in the garden, and maintaining records of butterfly sightings.

In 2008, improvements will include educational posts depicting plant and butterfly information.
