The mission of the Penn State Master Gardener volunteer program is to support Penn State Cooperative Extension by utilizing research-based information to educate the public on best practices in consumer horticulture and environmental stewardship.
What is the Master Gardener Program?
The Master Gardener program was established to assist cooperative extension in reaching the consumer horticulture audience. The program provides interested individuals with extensive training in many phases of gardening. Participants dedicate volunteer time to teaching other home gardeners.
Training classes cover all aspects of gardening...botany, soils and turf, plant propagation, and landscape design are a few examples. After completing the class, 'interns' are required to complete 50 hours of volunteer service to recieve certification as a Master Gardener.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A MASTER GARDENER?
The Penn State Master Gardeners, in conjunction with Agricultural Extension, offer an annual three-part course covering a variety of gardening topics. The course lasts for twelve weeks each fall. Lecturers include professionals in horticulture and landscaping, Penn State faculty members, and experts from Agricultural Extension. Upon successful completion of coursework, attendees can become interns in the Master Gardener program and work toward full certification as they volunteer for community service work and educate the public about gardening.
For more information about the Master Gardener Program or to register for the course, phone the Centre County Extension Office at (814) 355-4897 or email mas79@psu.edu
